Question

How do I find an e-book?

Answer

Handout Finding an E-Book

E-Books can be accessed through any internet connected device like desktops, laptops, tablets, or smartphones. E-Books are just like print books that you would physically access in the library. They can be accessed from anywhere that you have an internet connected device.

Using OneSearch to Access E-Books:

  • Go to the library's homepage, www.frostburg.edu/library
  • Under WELCOME you have OneSearch.
  • In OneSearch, you can search by keyword title and author.
  • For this example, we will search on social media and college students.
  • Select SEARCH.
  • The results list comes up and you will see the e-books available.
  • If you are off-campus, you will need to log in with your 14-Digit Barcode and last name.
    • If you don't know where to find your 14-Digit Barcode, see the FAQ on finding your 14-Digit Barcode.
  • The results screen that comes up has lots of different results. It includes scholarly/peer-reviewed articles, magazine articles, news, or newspaper articles, information about print books, and e-books.
  • If you want to narrow it down to just E-Books, go to REFINE MY RESULTS on the left-hand side.
  • Scroll down and we'll go to where it says PUBLICATION TYPE on the left-hand side.
    • E-Books is not listed here.
    • Select where it says SHOW MORE, and this has all the different publication types.
    • So now if I scroll down, and put a check next to E-Books and select UPDATE
  • Now the results will just be E-Books.
  • Just like searching in the E-Books Screen you will have ones that say PDF Full Text or EPUB Full text. You can access those by selecting either PDF Full Text or EPUB Full Text.
    • When you are in the e-book, an option available is to save, e-mail, or print out a certain number of pages of the e-book.
  • You will also have some that may just say Frostburg State University with no link to full text.
    • To access these you would need to select the FindIt button and follow the links to access the e-book.

NOTE:
You may find some books that do not say Frostburg State University on them. It may say something like University of Maryland College Park. It may say Towson University. Unfortunately, we don't have access to those. If you do find one that we don't have, you can search to see if it may be available another way for you.

Using the Library Catalog to find an E-Book:

  • Go to the library's home page: www.frostburg.edu/library
  • Select the link that says Library Catalog
  • The FSU Library Catalog screen will open up.
  • At the top of the screen, select Advanced Search
  • Type in your keyword(s) and select E-Book under Format.
  • Select Search.
  • You will get results that are just E-Books.
  • To access an e-book, select the FindIt Button.
  • You may be presented with 2 different screens:
    • First:
      • The first will tell you to select the link to access the E-book at EBSCOhost Ebooks.
      • Select this link and it will bring you to the e-book.
      • Select PDF or EPUB full text to access the e-book.
    • Second:
      • The second will tell you to select the link to access the e-book at Ebook Central Perpetual, DDA, and Subscription titles.
      • Select this link.
      • It will prompt you to log in with our 14-digit barcode and last name, even if you are on-campus.
      • Once you log in, it will bring you to the e-book.
      • You can access the e-book by selecting Read Online
