Handout Using OneSearch to Find Newspaper Articles

Steps to finding a newspaper/magazine article using OneSearch:

  • Go to the Library's Home Page: www.frostburg.edu/library.
  • Under this welcome sign is OneSearch.
    • OneSearch allows you to search by keyword, title, or author for resources.
  • For this example, we will search on social media and college students
  • Go ahead and select Search.
  • The results screens will come up and we have about 43,000 results.
  • If you are working off-campus, it will say up at the top it says HELLO GUEST. LOGIN FOR FULL ACCESS.
    • Select HELLO GUESTS LOGIN FOR FULL ACCESS. It will ask me for your 14-digit barcode and last name.
    • Your 14-digit barcode can be found on my FSU ID.
    • Your barcode is 14-digits and will start with 2206.
    • If you need assistance finding your barcode, see the FAQ on Finding your 14-Digit Barcode.
    • Once you log in, you then will be able to access everything that the library has full text.
  • If you are working on-campus, you will not have to log in.
  • And again, I have four 43,511 results.
  • And if you scroll down, you can see I've got academic journals, I might have reports, I might have books.
  • So I've got lots of different items and you can see that it puts an icon next to the items.
  • So what you want to do is narrow it down to newspaper articles first.
  • Newspaper articles:
    • To narrow down, go to the left-hand side of the screen where it says REFINING RESULTS and under publication type it as a list of different publication types.
    • Newspaper articles are not listed there. So I'm going to go ahead and click where it says SHOW MORE.
    • And then we can see that NEWS is listed here. I'm going to go ahead and put a check next to NEWS and CLICK UPDATE.
    • And now I will only have results that are newspapers. You can see we have a newspaper icon listed next to that.
    • You can continue to narrow down by full-text, subject, geography, etc.
    • Once you find a newspaper article that you want to use and to get more information about the newspaper article, click on the title of the newspaper article.
    • And again, what it'll do is bring the screen up that will provide more information about the newspaper article.
  • Magazine articles:
    • To find magazine articles, go back to your result list.
    • Up at the top it tells you right now what you have currently refined my results too.
    • Select the X next to news to remove that and so now you are back to all different types of results.
    • And this time you want to do is put a check next to magazines under publication type.
    • Now you can see that you will just get magazine articles with an icon that says Periodicals.
    • You can continue to narrow down by full-text, subject, geography, etc.
    • Once you find a magazine article that you want to use and to get more information about the magazine article, click on the title of the magazine article.
    • And again, what it'll do is bring the screen up that will provide more information about the magazine article.
