Question

How do I seach for scholarly/peer-reviewed articles in OneSearch?

Answer

Handout Searching for Scholarly/Peer-Reviewed Articles through OneSearch

This answer will walk you through searching for scholarly/peer-reviewed articles through OneSearch.

Steps:

  • Go to the library's home page: www.frostburg.edu/library
  • Under the welcome sign is OneSearch.
  • OneSearch allows you to search by keyword, title, or author.
    • It also allows you to narrow down to scholarly/peer-reviewed articles and full-text articles right on the library's homepage.
  • For this example, search on SOCIAL MEDIA AND COLLEGE STUDENTS as keywords
  • Select Search.
  • This will open up the results screen.
  • If you are off-campus, you will get the login option at the top that says: HELLO GUEST. LOGIN FOR FULL ACCESS.
    • Log in using your 14-digit Barcode and last name.
    • Your Barcode starts with 2206.
    • If you don't know your barcode, see FAQ on how to find your 14 digit barcode
  • Once you log in, you will have access to everything that is full-text available.
  • We can see that I have about 43,000 items.
  • So these are scholarly/peer- reviewed articles, magazine articles, newspaper articles. They might be print books, e-books.
  • To narrow down to just scholarly/peer-reviewed articles:
    • On the left-hand side of the screen, it allows me to REFINE MY RESULTS.
    • So where it says LIMIT TO: I'm going to narrow to scholarly/peer-reviewed articles.
    • So I will put a check next to that and now I just get scholarly/peer-reviewed articles.
  • We now have about 30,000 scholarly/peer-reviewed articles.
  • You can continue to narrow down your results by full-text, subject, date, geography.
  • Once you find an article that you would like to use, click on the title of that article.
  • You will then have additional information about that article, including the abstract.
    • The abstract tells you what the article is about in a short paragraph.
    • It can help you determine whether you want to use the article for your research.
